Language Editor

With the Language Editor, you can edit the language files for the AllSync user interface or add a new language.

Add a New Translation

  1. Start AllSync and open the Language Editor via the menu bar under Tools.
  2. Click New in the toolbar and select 'Create new language file named "lang.txt"'.
  3. Under Options, enable the setting 'Use language file "lang.txt" for the user interface'.
  4. Click Open in the toolbar and select 'Open language file "lang.txt"'.
  5. Review the formatting rules before starting the translation.
  6. Click 'Restart' in the toolbar so that the AllSync user interface displays the new translations.


Edit an Existing Language

  1. Start AllSync and open the Language Editor via the menu bar under Tools.
  2. Click the 'Open' button in the toolbar and select the language you want to edit.
  3. Review the formatting rules before making changes.
  4. Click 'Restart' in the toolbar so that AllSync restarts and your translations become visible.


Language Files

A language file contains all texts displayed during the use of AllSync. It may include the following lines:
  • Translation text lines: Number=Text
  • Comment lines starting with #
  • Empty lines
Notes for editing with an external text editor:
  • All lines must end with CR+LF.
  • The language file must be saved in UTF-16 LE format without a BOM.


Formatting Rules

The following rules must be observed when editing language files:
  • The 4-digit number at the beginning of a line must not be changed:
    1234=Hello World!
  • Only the text after the equals sign may be translated:
    1234=Hello World!
  • Do not remove leading or trailing spaces:
    1234= Hello World!

The text may contain the following placeholders, which are replaced during program execution:
  • Placeholders for text or numbers: %1, %2, %3, ...
  • Placeholder for line break: %0
The translated text must always include all placeholders from the English original. Do not remove or add new placeholders.


Text Window

You can edit the contents of a language file in the text window. Please observe the formatting rules.

The following keyboard shortcuts can be used in the text window:
  • CTRL + C : Copies the selected text.
  • CTRL + X : Cuts the selected text.
  • CTRL + V : Pastes text from the clipboard.
  • CTRL + F : Starts a forward search with the selected text.
  • CTRL + B : Starts a backward search with the selected text.
  • CTRL + S : Saves the file.


Toolbars

Various toolbars with commands are available for editing language files. You can adjust the size and labels of the icons by right-clicking on a toolbar. The following toolbars are available:
  • 'Language File' Toolbar
  • 'Miscellaneous' Toolbar
  • 'Text Window' Toolbar
  • 'File' Toolbar
  • 'Search' Toolbar

'Language File' Toolbar

  • 'Open' Button
    • Open language file of current language
      Opens the language file of the currently used language for editing in the text window.
    • Open Language File 'lang.txt'
      Opens the file lang.txt.
    • Open Language File '...'
      Opens a selected language file. The language file currently used by AllSync is marked with a checkmark before the filename.
  • 'New' Button
    • Create a new language file named 'lang.txt'
      Creates a copy of the English language file lang_eng.txt with the filename lang.txt. This file serves as a template for translating the AllSync user interface into a new language.
  • 'Save' Button
    Saves the opened language file in the text window.
  • 'Close' Button
    Closes the opened language file in the text window.


'Miscellaneous' Toolbar

  • 'Options' Button
    • Automatically save changes to language file on exit
      When exiting the Language Editor, changes to the language file are saved automatically without prompting.
    • Automatically open last language file on startup
      When starting the Language Editor, the last opened language file is loaded automatically.
    • Save view when closing language file
      When closing a language file, the current view in the text window is saved and restored upon reopening. Only the view of the last closed file is saved.
    • Use language file 'lang.txt' for the user interface
      The file lang.txt is automatically used to display the user interface each time AllSync starts.
  • 'Restart' Button
    Use this to restart AllSync so that your changes to the language file become visible in the user interface.
  • 'Help' Button
    Displays this documentation.


'Text Window' Toolbar

  • 'Check' Button
    This button checks each line in the text window for the following errors in the language file:
    • Invalid language IDs
    • Missing translation text
    • Missing equals sign after the language ID
    • Missing, unknown, or duplicate language IDs
    • Missing, unknown, or duplicate placeholders
    Comment lines (#) and empty lines are ignored during the check. All detected errors are listed in the log. Double-clicking an error message jumps to the corresponding line in the text window.
  • 'Correct' Button
    This button corrects the following formatting errors in the text window:
    • Removes all leading spaces from a line.
    • Adds a missing equals sign after the language ID.
    • Removes all characters between the language ID and the equals sign.
    All corrections are listed in the log. Double-clicking an error message jumps to the corresponding line in the text window.
  • 'English' Button
    Activating this button displays an additional toolbar. The English original text for the language ID of the currently selected line appears in the text field. This allows you to directly compare your translation with the English source text.
    Note: The first activation may cause a short delay as the full English language file is loaded into memory once.
  • 'Start' Button
    Jumps to the first line in the text window.
  • 'End' Button
    Jumps to the last line in the text window.
  • 'Decrease' Button
    Decreases the font in the text window. This can also be done by holding the CTRL key and scrolling the mouse wheel.
  • 'Increase' Button
    Increases the font in the text window. This can also be done by holding the CTRL key and scrolling the mouse wheel.
  • 'Options' Button
    • Word Wrap
      Enables automatic word wrap in the text window so that long text lines are always fully visible.
    • Highlight font color of active line
      Displays the text of the line where the cursor is located in a different font color to improve readability and orientation.


'File' Toolbar

Displays the full file path of the opened language file in a text field.
  • 'Open File' Button
    Opens the language file with the default program for .txt files.
  • 'Open File Path' Button
    Opens the file’s folder in Windows Explorer.


'Search' Toolbar

Allows you to search the contents of the text window.
